Virtual Page Talk – Rear Admiral James Johnson, Jr., USN (ret.)

Registration is closed for this event

In January 1959, Jim Johnson (from Chicago) arrived in Washington, DC, to be sworn in as a House Page - sponsored by Rep. Barratt O'Hara (D-IL). Instead, when he arrived, Jim was told that all Page appointments were filled, denying him the opportunity to be the first African American House Page in the 20th Century. Eventually, a bipartisan group of five representatives hired him to work in their offices throughout the work week so that he could attend the Capitol Page School. He graduated with honors from CPS in 1961. Jim subsequently graduated from Oberlin College and the University of Rochester Medical School, completing his residency at UCLA. Jim joined the Navy in 1966, during his first year of medical school, achieved the rank of Rear Admiral, and ultimately assumed command of the Naval Medical Center in San Diego. Admiral Johnson commanded NMC San Diego until his retirement in 2005.
